As a teaching artist, engaging the youth of Philly takes a lot of creativity. I have developed a curriculum for mixed media utilizing different materials, which you can check out here. I put my students behind the camera and show them how to capture imagery and how to use handmade props to make a story – using a simple smart phone or a camera. The work captures their attention as they are engaged on multiple fronts – they can put themselves in front of the camera, stay behind the camera, create their stages, draw, paint, build, edit using a computer. This work is important because the teens get a chance to explore what work they most enjoy within the field of mixed media, enables them to work on their own digital creative projects, and piques their interest towards further education in this marketable skillset.
